Case Summary
The Ken and Barbie Killers otherwise known as Karla Homolka, 17, and Paul Bernardo, 23, first met in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada in October of 1987. At this time Bernardo had already begun his rape spree back in May. The two were attracted to each other so intensely that within hours they had sex. A little more than a year later, two days before Christmas, the pair drugged and raped Homolka’s younger sister Tammy in the basement of her family home. This was Homolka’s Christmas present to Bernardo since she could not give him her virginity as she had lost it before they met. Tammy died as a result of the drugs by choking on her own vomit, but her death was ruled an accident.
On June 15th of 1991 Bernardo abducts Leslie Mahaffy, her dismembered body is found a few days later on the same day the killers wed, June 29, 1991. The Third girl Kristen French was abducted on April 16, 1992 and her naked body is found four days later on April 30th. She was strangled to death.
It was not until February of 1993 that Bernardo was charged with being the Scarborough rapist. From there more evidence was found linking the both of them to the murders and Homolka made a plea agreement and both of them are charged with the murders of the three girls. Homolka was convicted and sentenced to 12 years in prison in June of 1993. The couple divorced in 1994 and Homolka testified in court against Bernardo. In 1995 Bernardo was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
As of today Homolka is out of prison and has three children. She is currently living in Quebec with her second husband, although they lived in the Caribbean for several years after Homolka's release. Meanwhile, Bernardo recently applied for parole in Toronto, Canada. Around the same time it came to light that he had plans to marry a Toronto woman who he charmed through letters in his cell. It is unknown if the wedding plans are still on.
